Transport and Parking

Student Life

The City campus now offers a free bike share hub to provide a convenient and environmentally friendly transport solution for students and staff. You can save money, get some exercise and avoid having to find a carpark.

You can borrow a bike, helmet and lock for free for up to four hours (or for a small fee if over four hours).

The system is easy to use and simple instructions are provided at the hub, which is located outside Café X.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Register at using your Ara student email address (not your personal email address). You will get a personal PIN number. (Note: You can alternatively register using a credit card  - there is still no charge for up to 4 hours, however there is a $4 initial charge, which remains as a credit on your NextBike account).
  2. Download the NextBike app through Google Play, Apple App Store or Microsoft Store either by scanning the QR code on the Ara bike stand sign or bike mudguard, or typing in your phone browser - it will take you to the most relevant app store
  3. At the bike share hub, enter the bike’s number into the app
  4. Release the bike, helmet and lock using the four digit lock code the app will give you
  5. Borrow the bike. Use the helmet - be a safe and considerate rider. You can secure the bike using the lock while you are borrowing it within the 4 hours
  6. Return the bike, helmet and lock (we are not linked to the Christchurch city bike share system, so you must return the bike to the Ara City Campus stand)
  7. Check the bike in on the Nextbike app or call the automated hotline. You must do this to end your free borrow period – otherwise you may be charged next time

The Ara bike share is maintained by NextBike. If you have any problem at any stage of using bike share, please ring NextBike on 09 909 9090 or email

* You must over 18 years of age to use NextBike.
