Student Life

Jo Carter

Kia ora, my name is Jo and I am the Student Voice Coordinator.

Having a say and being able to inform and affect decisions about Ara is a vital part of making Ara a place you are proud of. Ara can't improve if they don't know what you, students, want improved.  I am here to develop ways in which you can have your voice heard and be involved in the decision making process. Sometimes it takes time for the bigger areas of change but sometimes one comment, suggestion or voicing a concern directly to a tutor can result in almost immediate change.

There are lots of ways Ara involve students:

  • Student reps (per class or year group) who consult with decision making committees, come together and support one another at a department level.  Check out their video here.
  • Department Student Reps and other Student group Reps who sit on Student Council. They ensure your priorities are fed through to management and Academic Board.  They also guide Ara on how the Compulsory Student Services Levy should be spent.
  • Direct student-tutor dialogue
  • Social media forums eg. Class or department facebook or moodle pages.
  • 'Student Plug In' facebook page (run by students)
  • Student groups
  • Focus groups
  • Course evaluations
  • Feedback forms
  • Surveys
  • Have Your Say online feedback on campus life
  • You Said, We Did - keeping you informed of changes made as a result of your feedback

If you want to set up a group, be involved somehow, or just have something to say, a solution or a way forward …I'd love to hear from you. We need to improve how we feedback information to you. What ways can we do this?

I am based in L232 at the top of the library stairs at City campus, or if I'm not there get me on 021 955560 or jo.carter@ara.ac.nz I roam around all campuses so please contact me.

Can't wait to hear from you! Enjoy your time at Ara, tell us about it!
